What is a corrugated box?

A corrugated box is a disposable container with sides made up of three layers of material: inside, outer, and middle. The middle layer is fluted, which means it is designed in rigid, wave-shaped arches to cushion and support weighted materials placed in a corrugated box.

The common cardboard box has been around for more than 200 years. The practice of adding flutes for corrugation began around the middle of the first industrial revolution. Since its inception, the corrugated box has evolved into the most common type of shipping container, appearing in all aspects of material management and transportation.

How to Make Corrugated Boxes

Despite its apparent simplicity, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into account before manufacturing can start on a corrugated box. Corrugated boxes, like any other manufacturing and shipping apparatus, are engineered and designed with specific goals in mind, such as strength, capacity, and capacity.

The construction of the box, the flute size, the burst strength, the edge crush strength, the flat crush strength, the weight of the paper, the heaviness of the cardboard sheets, and the different surface treatments are all examined in the first step of box manufacturing.

The Corrugated Boxes Essential Components

Construction of Corrugated Boxes

A corrugated box can have one of three types of walls: single, double, or triple.

  • Single Wall: Having a single outer layer and an inner layer with fluting between them, this is the most basic type of corrugated wall design.
  • Double Wall: To create a box that can hold heavier and larger items, the double wall design adds an extra layer of fluting.
  • Triple Wall: Triple wall corrugated boxes have three layers of flutes, as the name suggests. To add stability, each layer has flutes of varying sizes. Cushioning and compression strength are optimized by the additional layers.

Manufacturing Corrugated Board

A corrugator is the machine that creates the corrugated board for corrugated boxes. The primary components of corrugated board are the liners, which are the board’s flat facing and are made of different paper grades. The softwood trees’ long fibers are used to create this main component. Hardwood trees’ shorter fibers are used to create the fluted section.

The fluted form is created by combining enormous rolls of paper into a single facer. The paper is steam-heated to 338°F (170°C) in order to form the flute. Utilizing pressure rollers to press the fluted paper flat, a single liner sheet is joined to the fluted paper by applying glue to the flute peaks at a regulated temperature. Thus, the single-faced web is created.

The single-faced web exits the single facer and proceeds to the double glue unit and double backer. Two single face webs are fed into the unit along with the liner to create a double-walled corrugated paper product. In the double glue unit, glue is applied to the flute tips that are visible in order to join the outer liner. The fluted single face web and liner are continuously heated at carefully regulated temperatures throughout the process to solidify the glue and guarantee a strong bond.

Corrugated box finalisation

The corrugated boards that have been scored, printed, and cut are fed into a trimmer, which perforates the boards to make handles and flaps. Up to ninety boxes can be finished in a minute using this process.

When the boxes are sufficiently trimmed and formed, they are fed through a folding machine, which completes the box’s forming by bending it along the score lines and applying glue to the sections that will be joined.

Uses for Corrugated Boxes

●       Food Industry

To prevent contaminating fresh fruits and vegetables, water and starch are combined to make the glue that joins the flutes and liners in corrugated boxes. When shipping food, corrugated boxes offer a number of advantages. Their safety and ability to fend off bacterial infections are the two main advantages. Corrugated boxes extend the shelf life of food, according to numerous studies.

●       Office supplies and stationery

The most significant worry when shipping or storing office supplies—particularly paper—is that they might get damaged during storage or during transportation. The worry of having damaged work materials is eliminated by the strength and cushioning of corrugated boxes, which stop this from happening.

●       E-CommerceBoxes

serve multiple purposes in the e-commerce industry, the most important of which is to maintain an efficient and highly responsive supply chain, which is an essential component of e-commerce. Corrugated boxes are the backbone of the e-commerce supply chain and have increased in popularity over the last two years. Textiles online

●       Electronics

When selecting boxes for shipping electronics and electronic components, extreme caution must be exercised. These kinds of things are delicate and easily broken if improperly packed. For this reason, corrugated boxes are used and supplemented with packing materials for added protection.

●       Healthcare materials

shipped for healthcare purposes, like those used in the electronics industry, require the same level of care and attention. Poor packaging and improper handling can easily damage delicate and sensitive medical instruments. To ensure that medications arrive safely, several shipping conditions must be met.

●       Batteries

Shipping materials for the battery industry must adhere to stringent safety and legal requirements. The fiberboard used to make these specially designed boxes adheres to corrugated box industry standards. Aside from the use of specially manufactured liners, each battery shipping container must be clearly marked with the contents and appropriate safety guidelines.

●       Automotive

Because auto parts come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, shipping them requires careful planning and preparation. The basic rule is to protect the part to be shipped from damage by using packing material that is sturdy, able to handle weight, and cushioned.

●       Military

When shipping materials to the military, several Mil-Spec regulations must be followed. Unlike other industrial applications, the military provides a list of requirements as well as a description of production methods for the materials they use. The first and most obvious requirement for military boxes is that they are strong.

●       Publishing

Weight is a major issue for publishing companies when shipping books, documents, magazines, and other printed materials because a large amount of printed material can be very heavy. Once the weight issue has been resolved, the next concern is moisture, which can severely damage printed material.
